Beans and Rice Project: A Recipe for Success

During the season of Lent, many Christians make an effort to better their lives through prayer, fasting, a change in lifestyle or helping others. Damien High School students, parents, faculty and staff did just that to help those in need by participating in the “Beans & Rice Project.”

Each Friday in Lent, six days in all, faculty, staff and parents would donate, prep, cook and serve rice and beans. Students who participated in the project would donate their lunch money in exchange for a bowl of rice and beans. Approximately, 900 bowls were served to students, faculty and staff generating $1,243.

The student body voted that these funds be donated to Open Table, a satellite food pantry for the Inland Valley Hope Partners, which brings together faith communities, businesses, individuals and community groups, and ensures the empowerment of people in need by providing food, shelter and supportive services.
