A Spartan’s
life is service-oriented. Whether it is in the service of God, his community,
or an individual in need, a Spartan makes time to give to others. Not only does
a Spartan man gives, he is humble and private in doing so. He does not tell
everyone how much time, talent, or money he donates; rather, he gives because
it is his responsibility and he understands that it is the right thing to do.
Although you may not always know it, because they do not announce it, Spartans
can be found all over the community in various forms: volunteering at a shelter,
being an altar-server, donating old clothes, or even being generous with his
particular talents. Most importantly, a Spartan man takes time out of his busy
schedule to attend to a need without complaint or irritation. No matter whom he
helps or in what forms he gives of himself, a Spartan serves with humility,
gratitude, and kindness.
Creatively, share one of your stories of service. This again can be depicted in whichever way you see best shows your humility,, gratitude and kindess. Secondly, do at least one act of kindness this week and take a photo of you in the act. Use this as the cover for your final Flip-grid/ presentation....

As Spartan men,
we learn to be navigators. Each Spartan man has his own unique voyage
to navigate. We learn to not just navigate our physical world but to also
become metaphorical explorers on a life-long journey of self-discovery and
knowledge. As we embark on our adventures in life, trials and tribulations will
inevitably stand to challenge our aspirations. We know our journeys will not be
easy, and yet, just like the navigators and explorers of the
past, Spartan men do not balk; we rise to meet the challenges. We
plot new courses, explore new routes, and boldly seek innovative solutions.
Each new trial is an opportunity to grow and learn, to hone skills, and to test
the limits of our abilities. Spartans learn to appreciate the
metaphorical journey, and not just the destination, as they navigate the world.
Short and simple: Doing what you’re supposed to do will make you feel happy and fulfilled.
We will be reading and discussing the following story. Then, you will show how you are a metaphorical explorer on this journey of life. USe the questions to brainstorm what your self-discovery journey includes.
This short story will be used as a prompt for your final.

The Damien Spartan is
an adventurous soul. He does not back down from challenges and
when adventure calls, he answers. He is not afraid to sail,
swashbuckle, or slide headfirst into a situation if the need arises. Many
years ago Joseph Campbell wrote a book called The Hero With 1,000 Faces,
in which he discusses the common characteristics of the hero’s journey across
many different cultures. Each Damien student is on his own hero’s
journey, going headlong into the educational and
social adventures that await him each day so that at the end of his
high school journey, much like Campbell’s hero, he finds himself the master of
his own world.
“You can never cross the ocean unless you have the courage to lose sight of the shore.”– Christopher Columbus
For this section, you will be either writing a short "Biography," about a challenge, an adventure, a heroic moment, or an educational or social adventure where you have been the adventurer OR creating and annotating a playlist of 10 songs that show your own hero's journey. (Include links)
There are examples of both below.

Whether it is
creativity, art, sports, or leadership, Spartan men are talented.
They excel above others in one or more areas and work toward greatness in
others. All Spartans have talent; some are easily seen and some
are hidden but all Spartans bring greatness. Damien is a better and
more interesting place because of the various talents shared across
the campus. As a community, we celebrate everything that makes each person
unique and provides a place where differences and individuality are celebrated.
Share your talent! Shine! Be creative!
Take a few minutes to be mindful of your skillset. Examine your talents. Are you using them as much as possible? Do you need to dig up some of your old talents, shine them up a bit and start using them again? Share your talent with your classmates. You have the freedom to present in any way that shows your greatness!

A Spartan is not easily deterred from his goals as
he knows that anything worth attaining is worth working for.
A Spartan believes that he is capable of achieving anything that he
works hard to accomplish. Just as with his faith,
the Spartan knows that it is OK to be knocked down seven times as
long as he gets up the eighth time. A Spartan will succeed
where others will fail because with our shield or on it is the code of
the Spartan man.
We will be watching and discussing the video and short story in class. Then, you will be looking at the list of "A Beautiful Life," You will select five of these or five of your own with the same goal. What are five goals you wish to accomplish? How? Again, this can be a poem, a list, graph, art work, song....This is your way of sharing what you will succeed in; because you are a Spartan man.

To
be academic is more than just being smart.
Being academic means being a good student, working hard, being
conscious of ways to improve study skills, developing better work habits, and
becoming a better learner. Being academic also means taking advantage
of the resources available to a Spartan to acquire the knowledge and
develop the abilities necessary to prepare for the future, particularly a
future that includes college. In so doing, a Spartan learns to
analyze, understand and solve problems, and express their ideas in a clear and
meaningful fashion.
."As an academic, what do you have? You have the quality of your work and
the integrity with which you do it." --Ezekiel Emanuel
For this section, you will be creating a metaphor and a moral that explains your academic personality. You can do this in any creative way that you would like - but the elements required are that the metaphor is unique to you and shows how you learn, solve problems or express your ideas. The moral is one that you may have learned by past success or failure.

Though we,
as Spartans, come from different walks of life, there are aspects of
our personal journeys that we are all passionate about--occasions
that unleash a fiery string of emotions in our being. It cannot be fully
articulated, rather, it can only be expressed. This expression can occur on the
field, in the classroom, and beyond the school day. Whether it is
cheering in the Pit for our Spartan brothers, or challenging ourselves
in the classroom every Spartan holds their own
unique passion with great reverence and pride.
Each Spartan’s passion allows him to stand, at once, alone to
demonstrate his own individuality; and together. As a community, our private
and public passions weave together and form the fabric of our Damien
brotherhood. This community is one of diversity, rigor, and vitality,
where Spartans seek to find meaning and to thrive in their passions.
"People with passion can change the world for the better"-Steve Jobs“If you can’t figure out your purpose, figure out your passion. For your passion will lead you right into your purpose.” -- Bishop T. D. Jakes
You will be creating a "passion project," by this...I mean an investigative activity. You will identify an area of interest. Then, develop a burning question related to that topic. The burning question is a question you want to find the answer to, but it is a little more complicated. It is what we call a non-Google-able question. You can’t find the answer through a simple Internet search.
You will use a variety of sources to research your burning question. Next, create a product to present to your classmates Then write a short reflection where you think about what went well, what you would change, and what you learned.
For this section, we are also reading the short story, "To the Virgins, Make Much of Time." We will be discussing this poem and brainstorm our passions in class.

At Damien, we understand that each Spartan is
somewhere along their own spiritual journey.
As Spartans seek to understand their personal relationships with
themselves, their community, and God, Damien provides them with moments along
this journey to pause and reflect. In prayer, at masses, on retreats, and
through service, students utilize these opportunities to gain a better sense of
where they've been, where they are, and where they are going on
their spiritual journey.
In a creative way - you will be depicting your own Spiritual Journey. This can be done through an essay, letter, poem, pictures with explanations, graphs, an interview, song...... etc.... Criteria.... answer the key 3 points:Where you have been?Where you are?Where you are going?
In class today we will be reading the two attached poems, annotating them, and having a discussion to help motivate you on this assignment. Class participation will be required. All cameras need to be on.

We've read the story we've discussed the implications, and we've tried our best to understand what everyone was talking about: now, it is time for your minds to run free like wildebeests on the wide savannah. By this I mean: it is time for you to write an essay.
I'd like to keep things relatively simple and straightforward. Thus, at least for this assignment, you'll be writing a standard multi-paragraph analytical essay propelled by a single thesis. The essay should contain a short introduction, two (or three) body paragraphs, and a short conclusion (yes, in that order). I'd also like you to place your thesis as the last sentence or sentences of the introduction, and position your topic sentences at the beginning of each body paragraph. For now, though, I'd like you to organize your essay in this traditional way. Remember, this is a full, multi-paragraph analytical essay: as such, your answer to this question needs to probe deeply into the texts, and move beyond mere summary or explanation of plot. Your thesis statement should clearly and concisely argue your interpretation of the text, and answer the essay question directly. It should be supported by arguable and specific topic sentences, and a number (at least three) of well-explained quotes and textual references. Please site your source within your essay. Each body paragraph should, at least roughly, follow the progression of a topic sentence, introduction of evidence, integration and statement of quote, a discussion of exactly HOW the quote proves the topic sentence and thesis, and a transition sentence at the end.
ESSAY PROMPT:
In this essay, I’d like you to look primarily at setting. The setting and the physical environment/objects in a story, can act to reflect a hidden truth about the character OR to comment on a character or character’s behavior. In any case, the setting exists to tell the reader something that the narrator is either unable or unwilling to tell us.
A&P is a story about people in a grocery store. Sammy’s surroundings are aisles of food, eating-related objects, the conventional furniture of a supermarket. Updike is careful and detailed in his descriptions of this environment. Look specifically at concrete, physical objects, and the store itself. How does the setting help define Sammy’s character, or experience beyond what he himself is able/willing to tell us, and how does it help you; the reader, find meaning within that experience?
Today, you will use class time to write a first draft. For homework - you will take the time to write and revise. Your essay should present a unified argument based on evidence from the text and your analysis of it. It should be no more than two pages in length.

Due:
We have spent this week talking about the importance of proper formatting and clear communication in written formats. The intention is to have you realize the importance of proper composition to your written work as well as the power of writing to convey ideas.
For this assignment, I'd like you to reflect on a time in your life where you were involved in a miscommunication with another person. In 1-2 paragraphs (at least 3-5 sentences) please address the following questions:
What was the situation?
What was the cause of the miscommunication?
What was the result of the miscommunication?
How could the miscommunication have been avoided?
This is a form of personal narrative writing, meaning writing in which you are telling a story or relating an event that occurred. Therefore, the expectations for formal language are lower, but I still expect proper mechanics in your writing.
