or an individual in need, a Spartan makes time to give to others. Not only does
a Spartan man gives, he is humble and private in doing so. He does not tell
everyone how much time, talent, or money he donates; rather, he gives because
it is his responsibility and he understands that it is the right thing to do.
Although you may not always know it, because they do not announce it, Spartans
can be found all over the community in various forms: volunteering at a shelter,
being an altar-server, donating old clothes, or even being generous with his
particular talents. Most importantly, a Spartan man takes time out of his busy
schedule to attend to a need without complaint or irritation. No matter whom he
helps or in what forms he gives of himself, a Spartan serves with humility,
gratitude, and kindness. 
Creatively, share one of your stories of service.  This again can be depicted in whichever way you see best shows your humility,, gratitude and kindess. Secondly, do at least one act of kindness this week  and take a photo of you in the act.  Use this as the cover for your final Flip-grid/ presentation....

to navigate. We learn to not just navigate our physical world but to also
become metaphorical explorers on a life-long journey of self-discovery and
knowledge. As we embark on our adventures in life, trials and tribulations will
inevitably stand to challenge our aspirations. We know our journeys will not be
easy, and yet, just like the navigators and explorers of the
past, Spartan men do not balk; we rise to meet the challenges. We
plot new courses, explore new routes, and boldly seek innovative solutions.
Each new trial is an opportunity to grow and learn, to hone skills, and to test
the limits of our abilities. Spartans learn to appreciate the
metaphorical journey, and not just the destination, as they navigate the world.
Short and simple: Doing what you’re supposed to do will make you feel happy and fulfilled.

We will be reading and discussing the following story.  Then, you will show how you are a metaphorical explorer on this journey of life. USe the questions to brainstorm what your self-discovery journey includes.  
This short story will be used as a prompt for your final.

when adventure calls, he answers.  He is not afraid to sail,
swashbuckle, or slide headfirst into a situation if the need arises. Many
years ago Joseph Campbell wrote a book called The Hero With 1,000 Faces,
in which he discusses the common characteristics of the hero’s journey across
many different cultures.  Each Damien student is on his own hero’s
journey, going headlong into the educational and
social adventures that await him each day so that at the end of his
high school journey, much like Campbell’s hero, he finds himself the master of
his own world.

others. All Spartans have talent; some are easily seen and some
are hidden but all Spartans bring greatness. Damien is a better and
more interesting place because of the various talents shared across
the campus. As a community, we celebrate everything that makes each person
unique and provides a place where differences and individuality are celebrated.
Share your talent!   Shine! Be creative!
Take a few minutes to be mindful of your skillset. Examine your talents. Are you using them as much as possible? Do you need to dig up some of your old talents, shine them up a bit and start using them again?   Share your talent with your classmates.  You have the freedom to present in any way that shows your greatness!

long as he gets up the eighth time.  A Spartan will succeed
where others will fail because with our shield or on it is the code of
the Spartan man.   
We will be watching and discussing the video and short story in class.  Then, you will be looking at the list of  "A Beautiful Life,"  You will select five of these or five of your own with the same goal.  What are five goals you wish to accomplish?  How?  Again, this can be a poem, a list, graph,  art work, song....This is your way of sharing what you will succeed in; because you are a Spartan man.

Being academic means being a good student, working hard, being
conscious of ways to improve study skills, developing better work habits, and
becoming a better learner. Being academic also means taking advantage
of the resources available to a Spartan to acquire the knowledge and
develop the abilities necessary to prepare for the future, particularly a
future that includes college. In so doing, a Spartan learns to
analyze, understand and solve problems, and express their ideas in a clear and
meaningful fashion.

For this section, you will be creating a metaphor and a moral that explains your academic personality.  You can do this in any creative way that you would like - but the elements required are that the metaphor is unique to you and shows how you learn, solve problems or express your ideas.  The moral is one that you may have learned by past success or failure.
