Gonzales' Plan Works To Perfection With State Title

When Damien High School's Jarrett Gonzales suffered a season-ending injury last year, he worked his way back and earned a chance to compete at the world youth trials.

But the plan always was to recuperate to make a deep run when it mattered most with a trip up north.

Mission accomplished.

Gonzales ended a decorated high school career by bringing home a CIF-State track and field championships in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 37.30 seconds in front of 7,123 at Buchanan High School.

It was only last year when Gonzales, who is heading to UCLA, suffered a left hamstring injury and rolled his left ankle in the process, forcing him to miss most of the season and not have a chance to run at the Sierra League finals, much less the CIF-Southern Section prelims or finals, or even a trip to Clovis.

But Gonzales, after a strong performance at the prelims just a day earlier, completed the feat Saturday despite some early uneasiness.

A gust of wind right off the starting blocks worried him a bit, but it wasn't long before he hit his stride.

"Coming off the last hurdle on the curve and just opening up my stride and sprinting all the way through," Gonzales said when asked when he felt the race was his.

New Damien Chapel

Dear Damien Families,

It is with great joy that we announce our plans to create a larger, more centrally located chapel on the Damien Campus. The purpose of this project is to meet the needs of an expanding Campus Ministry program.  This year during Lent we had standing room only for Eucharistic Adoration in our existing chapel.  Daily morning mass attendance is growing as well.  We would like to have a chapel that would be able to facilitate an entire Theology class (approximately 50-60 seats). Though we realize that this is a good problem to have, we are asking for you to be a part of a plan to renovate an existing large classroom. While God deserves the best we have to offer we are trying to keep the costs as reasonable as possible.  The renovation project would involve paint, carpet and new furnishings. We would like create a small bell tower to call the students to Mass each morning. The existing chapel has only about twelve seats without kneelers, the tabernacle is wooden and the altar is in slight disrepair.

If you are interested in helping finance this project or if you know someone who might be able to donate time, expertise and/or materials please contact Debbie Rosas in the Advancement Office ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or 909-596-1946) to make a tax deductible contribution. You can also click the button below or the donation link on the Damien website - http://www.damien-hs.edu. Even small donations add up!

Above all, we ask that you offer prayers for our Damien students and the campus ministry program that we may offer our best to God each day. We look forward to seeing you in the new chapel, a power-house of prayer, to continue that brotherly spirit of thanksgiving  and sacrifice.

One Heart and One Spirit In Christ,
Fr. Peadar Cronin President, Mr. Pearsall Principal, Fr. John Roche Chaplain and  the entire Campus Ministry Team
