Dean of Curriculum Angela Curry discusses class schedules, accessing student grades, challenge exams, and more.

hello my name is Angela Curry and I'm the dean of curriculum here at Damien High School I wanted to tell you a little bit about our academics the information that you received during your orientation evening in terms of choosing your class will generate a class schedule that will be completed during the summer so in terms of knowing which classes for sure you're going to be taking we won't know that until we finished all of the information needed and collected from The Challenge exams for the math classes and from the summer school in terms of your English and the electives so you should receive a schedule sometime about 3 weeks before school starts tell you which classes your son has been enrolled and information about the books so that you can buy and purchase the books for those particular classes we recommend that you don't buy books until you receive that course schedule even though you did sign up for a certain class and you know a previous student who you're helping to buy books from it may in fact not be the class that you will be in so please wait until you do get that final class schedule in addition the information I wanted to share with you tonight is about how you can access information during the school year and one of the places that we have that teachers go to is there online Gradebook through Aries you can find that connection either on our webpage or if you go to the individual Aries connection if you go online you can get to their web page through their class link so you'll see the name of the class and your son's grade and then they'll be a button you can click and it will take you to that individual teachers class page from their teacher is asked to place their home or a connection to either Google classroom or to Moodle with your other places that some of our teachers use so every teachers information at least will be linked through that same location the Chromebook that we do use it is a one-to-one school for Chromebooks can be purchased on your own there is no requirement as to which Chromebook you purchase but the suggestions that we do give online will give you an idea of some of the ones that we found in a variety of price ranges so you can use that I wanted to talk about was just a reminder about Algebra 1 and geometry challenge Exam May 11th we will be hosting the first album The One Challenge exam this is literally the semester 1 and semester 2 from our Algebra 1 class D different options in terms of moving into your math class if your son was recommended to take algebra 1A which is a two-year algebra one class and you're fine with that then just do that you don't have to take any kind of exam if you would like for your son to be able to get into Algebra 1 give two options one you can take the first part of the algebra 1 challenge exam which is semester 1 and if he is that with the 70% or higher than he is eligible to go into Algebra 1 as a freshman or he can take the advanced math review summer course which has a test at the end of each week if he passes each of those tents by the end 5 weeks we will recommend for him to be in the algebra 1 class the following year if you don't if you want to be able to pass through Algebra 1 and you want your son to be in geometry in his freshman then you need to pass or he needs to pass both parts of the algebra 1 challenge exam and then he would be placed into honors geometry as a freshman the following weekend on May 18th I have a geometry challenge exam which is to out of geometry so again you take both semester finals of geometry and then if he passes them both with a 72% or higher he will move into honors Algebra 2 as a freshman the other option is to take either be out for one or the geometry as a 10-unit class during the summer as long as he scores a b or higher he will be moved on to the next level of math following year in order to prepare about the algebra 1 and geometry challenge exam we do have a list of the topics that you can find on our website under the Damien edu and then you go to academics and academic departments mathematics courses in challenge exams for it how many freshman you can take that list to your teacher make sure that that information is covered and if not then you can find a tutor or you can go online there are several programs that can help you cover the material you're missing I thank you very much have a great day
