my name is Jeff Corey and I'm the vice principal and director of counseling a Damien and I'd like to just talk to you briefly about the role of guidance and counseling which would be typical most comprehensive high schools are counselors work in three major areas the first is academic counseling where they work with our students on schedules for they work in the area of personal counseling although we do also employ some professional personal counselors that are on staff with us 4 days a week as an adjunct for students and families who may be going through a particularly challenging time whether it be in the immediate family or the Senate issues such as the passing of a relative or divorce or substance abuse or things like that and then in addition to working with students on their skin the counseling department also coordinates the school-wide testing program which a Damien is the PSAT which students will take a different version 9th grade 10th grade 11 and then the STAAR testing which freshmen and sophomores take 3 times a year in English and Mathematics classes all of those tests will eventually have a bearing on a student schedule opportunities as well so they serve both as benchmarks and as gateways for advanced classes as students move through the sophomore Junior and senior years next leg of counseling at Damien would be that we work with students on College and that's probably the area that takes up the most time the longer you're at school so in the freshman and sophomore years we introduced at our applicator how much are Rent-A-Center College Planning night know yeah that are academic planning nights freshman and sophomore years we begin the process toward College admissions then junior year and Senior the evening presentations are given over to college nights exclusively we have a 4 year graduated program of College advising that is very thorough and M is very deep and is complemented by college forums which are question-and-answer sessions for parents and students Buy application workshops for seniors to help them manage the online applications for common application the Coalition application Universal common application Cal State University and UC University of California and then we also have both individual call a college representative that are scheduled throughout the fall for juniors and seniors we have about 50 to 70 colleges visit in any given admissions and then each year in September we also host a try school college fair where we have about 70 to 80 colleges represented in an open house sort of setting and students and parents are free to circulate I to any of the colleges that are present that evening it probably goes without saying that most of our students and parents come to Damien with me spectation that they will go to college we do have some opportunities for students who are interested in not taking the college path but the bulk of our students are planning on going to call in any given year about 80% of them will be admitted to a four-year college and attend a four-year College anywhere between 15 and 18% will attend a community college and then the balance would either go directly into the workforce or perhaps into military family business something along those lines play counseling at the high school level if you are a student ticket in your freshman year who gets a note to go see your counselor I'm like in junior high it's not because you're in trouble for some high school don't handle disciplinary matter we handle matters related to your success and to your future path once you graduate from Damien
