Photo. Ch. One - Notes
These are notes from the end of Chapter One.
Transmitting Color to the Brain
- RED, GREEN, AND BLUE = MAIN THREE COLORS WE USE TO CREATE ALL COLORS THAT WE SEE.
- IF YOU MIX EQUAL AMOUNTS OF RED, GREEN, AND BLUE THE RESULT IS WHITE.
- THE TOTAL NUMBER OF COLORS THAT THE EYE CAN PERCEIVE IS AROUND 2.3 - 10 MILLION!
- TWO CHANNELS, ONE IS FOR COLOR, THE OTHER FOR BRIGHTNESS, BOTH SENT ON SAME HIGHWAY KNOWN AS THE OPTIC NERVE.
- BASED ON YOUR EXPERIENCE, MEMORY, AND EXPECTATIONS, YOUR BRAIN IS ABLE TO IMPOSE A MODEL OF THE WORLD IN WHICH YOU SEE.
- THE BEST EXAMPLE OF HOW MUCH YOUR BRAIN IS INVOLVED IN VISUAL PROCESSING IS THROUGH OPTICAL ILLUSIONS.
Light and Dark
- We are yet to devise any kind of technology that can perform the type of sophisticated color adaptation that your eyes pull off.
- The most significant difference between the eye and any camera is the range of brightness that your eye can perceive.
- Your eye controls brightness A.K.A Exposure, by opening and closing its iris, or pupil, to limit the amount of light that strikes the retina.
- DYNAMIC RANGE = The measure of darkness to lightest tones that can be captured by a device.
- Every time the amount of light in a scene doubles, photographers say that the scene has brightened by one stop, or “f-stop”.
- Conversely if you cut the amount of light in a scene in half, then the scene has darkened by one stop.
- EVERY DOUBLING OR HALVING OF LIGHT IS MEASURED AS ONE STOP.
- The human eye can perceive a total dynamic range of about 30 stops.
- The higher the “f-stop” the lighter the area, the lower the “f-stop” the darker the area.
Summing UP
- There are ways in which our cameras can out perform our eyes.
- First, you can change the lenses on your cameras, but not your eyes.
- Second, your camera has the ability to let in light for up to 30 seconds at a time.
- Third, your camera allows you to zoom in/extend your field of view, beyond what your eyes can do.
- The study of photography covers two major domains: craft, which is the study of the mechanics of making a good image,

In class workshops are absolutely crucial to your success as a photographer. It will afford you the opportunity to gain critiques and learn what you are very good at and what you may need work to work on. It is important to be very attentive during these sessions and do your best to offer and receive CONSTRUCTIVE criticism of you and your classmates’ work.
Becoming a talented photographer requires that you constantly view and take pictures. It is through trial and error and the viewing of other photographers’ work, that you will be able to, not only learn from your mistakes and learn from some of the best, but engage your innermost creativity.
If you have any questions about the course refer to the syllabus, the handbook or just come up and ask me. I am someone you can come up to for ANYTHING, so please do not hesitate to do so. After all, I was a Damien student at one time.
Student Expectations and Rules
Though this is an elective, this is NOT a blow off course. There will be a tremendous amount of time viewing and critiquing photographs, studying the material provided, doing in class worksheets, etc. Some of it, you may find repetitive and boring, other times you will be fully enveloped in your work, but you will RESPECT our class time together and the thoughts and critiques of each other. This means some of the most basic principles of classroom etiquette, which you have been taught throughout the years. They become even more essential in a class like this with people’s creativity and artistic visions in front of peers to see. Disrespect to your classmates or their ideas will absolutely not be tolerated in any way shape or form. It is crucial for you to understand this. Our classroom motto is as follows: “Everybody Love Everybody.” E.L.E.
Remember, that cameras and phones are NOT cheap. As one of my film teachers told me, “Take care of your equipment and it will take care of you.” I want you to experiment and be as creative as you can be, but DO NOT horse around with the equipment.
We will do our best to get as much as we can done in class, but be aware that it will often times require you to do your own work outside of class.
Grading
Though this will be many of your first times using cameras and equipment, there is no excuse for a lack of effort after proper instruction. Your grade will not only be determined on your grasp of the techniques, but also on the amount of effort you put into succeeding.
Classwork 15%
Homework 15%
Projects 40%
Tests 30%
Absolutely NO projects will be accepted late. You are expected to have your pictures ready to view on the due date. Homework that is turned in late will have a point deducted each day it is late. I expect honest work that is done on your own. Caught cheating on a quiz will result in an automatic 0.
This class will be only as good and as fun as the effort you put into it. I’m here to guide you, but this class depends on you and what you want to bring to the table. Share life through pictures!
