Course Description

This is the 1st course of the Religious Curriculum Framework designed by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the Biblical Sources of Christianity and to explore the revelation of Jesus Christ in Scripture.

Integral Student Outcomes

 

By Graduation, a Damien Spartan should be knowledgeable of the spiritual richness of the Catholic Faith by:

Course Description:

 

This is the 1st course of the Religious Curriculum Framework designed by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the Biblical Sources of Christianity and to explore the revelation of Jesus Christ in Scripture.

 

Course Objectives:

 

By the end of this course, students will:

  1. Comprehend Revelation from both Natural and Divine Sources
  2. Have an overview of Sacred Scripture as divinely inspired and the foundation of Church teaching
  3. Understand Scripture and learn how to interpret the Word of God
  4. Gain an overview of salvation history in the Old Testament & New Testament with particular study of the Gospels
  5. Examine the challenges and questions the Church faces in scriptural catechesis

 

Course Outline

 

  1. Revelation:  The Desire to Know God, Natural Revelation, Divine Revelation
  2. Interpretation and Overview of the Bible:  Understanding the Scriptures, Interpreting Scripture, Overview of the Old and New Testaments
  3. Revelation in the Old Testament:  Genesis, Exodus, The Historical Books, The Prophetic Books, Wisdom Literature
  4. Revelation in the New Testament:  The Gospels - The Synoptic Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke; The Gospel of John; Acts and Letters
  5. The Scriptures and the Life of Faith:  The Scriptures and the Life of the Church; The Scriptures and the Life of the Individual

 

 

 

 

 

Grading of Assignments:

 

1 group project – 10%

1 final paper – 10%

Quizzes/Tests – 30%

Homework assignments – 15%

Short papers – 10%

Participation – 10%

Class work/Journal – 15%

 

Late Work:  Homework is due at the beginning of class.  All homework turned in after the day it is due is considered late. Late work is accepted for 50% credit.

 

Cheating:  Cheating is not tolerated.  Please see the student handbook for a thorough explanation.  All consequences stated in the student handbook will apply.

 

Course Materials Required:*

-New American Bible

-Textbook:  The Bible:  The Living Word of God.  Author:  Robert Rabe.  Saint Mary’s Press. 

-Bound/spiral notebook for class notes* and Theology Journal

-Class notes may also be taken on laptops/ipads provided they are being used only for class note-taking and course work.  If they are found being used for any other purpose besides class notes and course work, you will no longer be able to use your laptop/ipads in this course.

-Binder with folder pockets and loose leaf paper

-Writing utensils

-Box of Kleenex - due Friday August 15th, 2014 for 10 homework points.  Please write your name and class period number on the Kleenex box.

 

At the start of the school year:

-Please have all required materials in class with you daily starting Monday August 11th, 2014 with the exception of the textbook. 

-Please have Theology textbook purchased and in class with you daily starting Monday, August 25th, 2014.

-The syllabus and procedures signature page is due on Friday August 15th, 2014.

-One box of Kleenex is due on Friday August 15th, 2014.

-Failure to have your Bible in class, will result in 1 point loss from the student’s classwork grade each day that it is missing.

- Failure to have the necessary material for class, will result in 1 point loss from the student’s classwork grade each day that they are missing.

 

Grading Scale:

Theology Class follows the same grading system as stated in the parent/student handbook:

A = 90-100%

B = 80-89%

C = 70-79%

D = 60-69%

F = 0-59%

Specific Theology Class Rules

  1. 1.      Be in your assigned seat when the bell rings & raise your hand if you wish to speak or leave your seat.
  2. 2.      Bring all books and materials to class & turn in assigned homework at the beginning of class.
  3. 3.      No vulgar or offensive language.
  4. 4.      Please follow directions the first time they are given & please do not speak when someone else is speaking.
  5. 5.      Observe all rules in the Damien Student Handbook.

 

 

Penalties if you choose to violate a rule in Theology Class:

 

First time:  Student will be told to see instructor after class to discuss the issue.  Depending on the severity of the violation, student will either receive a warning or a detention.

 

Second time:  30 minutes detention before or after school.*

 

Third time:  60 minutes detention before or after school.*

 

Fourth time:  Sent to Dean’s Office.  Parent notified.

 

Severe disruption:  Student sent immediately to Dean’s office.  Parent notified. 

 

*If you choose not to come to the assigned detention, you will receive one more opportunity to serve the detention.  If you neglect to serve a second time, you will be assigned a Dean’s Detention.

 

If the class as a whole is disruptive or not getting to work on the warm-up, etc., the class will receive a written warning on the board.  If there is still overall disruption, the class will begin losing minutes from time between classes, at break, lunch, or after school.
