Page 3.  Introduction

Background Statement - Open your paper with a brief discussion relating to your passage.  Include what research has been done on it before.

Problem Statement - This is the reason you are wanting to write a paper on this specific passage.  It might be that nobody has dealt with this verse before or you are curious as to its deeper meaning.  State the reason for your choice in 1-3 sentences.

Purpose of the Study – ask significant questions of what you hope to achieve by undertaking this research.

Pages 4-6 (can be additional pages):

Main Body of the Paper - Everything you include in this section of the paper should directly address your problem statement.  If it doesn't, don't put it in your paper.

You are not required to put everything you uncovered in your preparation research into your paper - only information that helps the reader see how you arrived at your conclusions regarding the text.

Hebrew/ English Translation –

Find the Hebrew of your passage online and copy & paste it into your paper.

Find 3 different English versions of your text and copy them into your paper.  E.G. New American Bible, King James’ Version, and the New International Version.

Final Page - Summary and Conclusion - Needs to match the introduction. Provide a summary of the main findings of the study and give clear answers to the Statement of the Problem.

Bibliography - Provide data relating to ALL the books and articles used in your research, not just those you cited in your paper.  You should also include resources used from the internet or other electronic resources.

Preparation/Research

Step 1:  Passage Familiarization

Read your chosen passage in English (in three different versions) and then in Hebrew.

Make a list of your preconceived ideas and what you have been previously told about the text.  Being aware of any preconceived ideas you may hold regarding a text will help you consciously test them when you make your interpretation.

Make a list of the key words and phrases in the passage.

Do a word study of the most crucial word(s) or phrase(s).  This involves identifying other occurrences of this word in the Bible, its definition and the various ranges of meaning this word may have.

Note the immediate and the general background of the text, and give estimated dates for any event(s) or person(s) in the passage.

Step 2:  Historical Context

Note words, ideas, events that allude or refer to that historical background.

Note the social, geographical and archaeological setting of the text

Step 3:  Literary Context and Features

Situate your text within the literary structure of the book and identify the literary genre of the text (narrative, poetry, genealogy, prayer, dream, etc.).

Note the patterns (repetition of words, ideas, sounds).

Outline the passage and establish its delimitations (where the passage logically begins and ends).

Step 4:  Biblical Context (Intertextuality)

Search in the Bible (Old Testament and New Testament) for texts which refer or allude to your text.

Justify your connection: note any parallels or echoes.

Analyze how your text is interpreted by the other texts.

Unit 2 Exam – Tuesday October 21

Study Guide

Mercy is God’s Greatest Attribute…but you still have to study.

The test will be a mixture of short answer, multiple choice, matching, and essay.

Study the Following:

Divine Revelation:  Definition – How God reveals Himself.  Meaning – God wants us to know Him and so he shows us who He is in two specific ways: Scripture and Tradition.

Scripture = The Bible; Scripture is a divinely inspired record of God’s Revelation in history.

Tradition = the process of passing on the Gospel message.  Began with the oral communication of the Gospel by the Apostles, was written down in the Scriptures, and is interpreted by the Magisterium under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Scripture encompasses the lives of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, Old Testament prophets.

We learn about God through the Wisdom literature; We learn about Christ through the preparation of John the Baptist.

Jesus Christ, the first and the last, the definitive Word of Revelation, is the one to whom all Scripture bears witness.

Jesus is God’s only Son.

How did we get the Scriptures?

Apostolic Tradition – the Apostles passed the stories of Jesus down through time.

Sacred Scripture came about through the Tradition of the Early Church and continues to be interpreted by the Church.

The Deposit of Faith – the heritage of faith contained in Scripture and Tradition

Since God inspired the biblical writers, he is the Author of Scripture.

Inerrancy - The Bible is without error in matters of Revelation and faith:  because God is the author of Scripture, all religious truths that God intends to reveal concerning our salvation are true.

The Bible is a sacred text for Christians; it contains in the Old Testament writings sacred to the Jews.

Oral Tradition

Development of the Written Books

Setting the Canon of Scripture

Apostolic Tradition is the basis for which books the Church included

Types of Prayer using the Scriptures

Liturgy of the Hours

Scripture at Mass and other liturgies

The psalms and the Our Father are biblical prayers shared by all Christians

Lectio Divina – a meditative, prayerful approach to Scripture

Criteria for interpreting the Sacred Scripture:

  1. Read and interpret Sacred Scripture within the tradition and teaching of the Church.
  2. Give attention both to what the human authors intended to say and to what God reveals to us by their words.
  3. Take into account the conditions of the time when it was written and the culture where it was written.
  4. Read and interpret Sacred Scripture in the light of the same Holy Spirit by whom it was written.
  5. Read and interpret each part of Sacred Scripture with an awareness and understanding of the unity of the content and teaching of the entire Bible.
  6. Be attentive to the analogy of faith, that is, the unity that exists in all Church teaching.

Senses of Scripture:

  1. The literal sense: the meaning conveyed by the words of Scripture and discovered by exegesis
  2. The spiritual sense
  3. Allegorical sense: recognizing the significance of events in the Bible as they relate to Christ
  4. Moral sense: Scripture teaches us and encourages us how to live and act
  5. Anagogical sense: Scripture speaks to us of eternal realities.

The Bible in Relation to Science and History

The Church teaches us how to relate truths of faith to science

There can be no conflict between religious truth and scientific and historical truth because the same Creator is the source of all truth.

Timeline Lesson One:

73 Books on the Bible

46 Old Testament Books

27 New Testament Books

Question:  Do I believe in objective truth?  Do I believe that truth is bigger than my personal opinion?

Bible means – collection of Books; the Latin word for Bible is Biblia

Canon means measuring rod and refers to the 73 books included in the Catholic Bible inspired by God

Salvation – the goal of faith (1 Peter 1:9)

The Word is a seed and we must be soil

Written and Oral Tradition = How we learn more about God’s love and His plan for salvation

Magisterium – teaching authority of the Catholic Church

The only wrong way to read Scripture is not to read it

14 Narrative Books Covered in the Timeline that tell the story of salvation history in chronological order

Read readings ahead – what is expected of Catholics before Mass

Shame – the result of our sin that turns us away from God

Mass – the only place some Catholics hear Scripture

Timeline Lesson Two: The Early World – the First Time Period we find in Scripture

Color of the Time Period - Turquoise

Book - Genesis 1-11

Question – Do I Trust God?

Genesis 1 & 2 – Creation

Genesis 3 – Temptation of Adam and Eve; Genesis 3: 15-16 – the curse and the promise from God

God tries to teach Adam and Eve after they sin that Love means suffering, pain, truth.

Adam and Eve’s third son is Seth

It rains for 40 days and 40 nights during the flood.

Allegory – literary device used to convey truth through symbolism – like the story of Creation.

One Holy Family – Covenant with Noah

Sabbath – what man was created for, sign of the first Covenant

One Holy Couple – Covenant with Adam and Eve

Genesis – means Beginning; Hebrew for Genesis/Beginning is Bereshith

Noah – Portrait of Faith

Perfect Love is manifested in the Trinity

Study Guide – Unit 1 Test – Tuesday September 9th, 2014

The Test will be a mixture of short answer, multiple choice, matching, and essay.

Know the Following:

  1. Question: Why did God make you?

2.      Answer: God made me to know Him, to love Him, and to serve Him in this world, and to be happy with Him forever in the next.

3.  “The Word of God: Interpreting Scripture and Tradition”

Cornerstone document: Dogmatic Constitution on Divine Revelation: Dei Verbum

Date: November 18, 1965

God revealed himself:

in the order imposed during creation

in the Law given through Moses

through the prophets

through his promises and covenant

in the Incarnation (the fullness of revelation)

in the tradition passed down through the apostles

4.  What Constitutes Divine Revelation?

Revelation is constituted by two elements:

Sacred Scripture – the set of holy writings inspired by the Holy Spirit

Sacred Tradition – “the living transmission of the message of the Gospel in the Church” (CCC Glossary)

5.   Inspiration of Scripture

The Holy Spirit inspired imperfect men to write, edit, and compile the Scriptures – God did not dictate

God is free from error, but human writers are not

Words, details, facts, etc. may be wrong, but the true message of God is not

 6.  Interpretation of Scripture

Literal Sense vs. Spiritual Sense

Literal sense is the direct meaning conveyed by the words of the human author

Spiritual sense is the meaning of a text when read under the influence of the Holy Spirit in the context of the paschal mystery of Christ

Typology: “discerns in God’s works of the Old Covenant prefigurations of what he accomplished in the fullness of time in the person of his incarnate Son”.

7.  Genres

Historical

Legal

Liturgical

Wisdom

Prophetic

Psalm/Song

Apocalyptic

Epistle

Parable/Allegory

Etc.

Old Testament vs. New Testament - “The New Testament is hidden in the Old and the Old is made manifest in the New” – St. Augustine

 8.  Lectio Divina – 4 Parts (English and Latin)

Lectio - Reading

Meditatio - Meditation

Oratio - Prayer

Contemplatio - Contemplation

 9.  You have made us for Yourself O God and our hearts are restless until they rest in You.  -Saint Augustine

The thirst and desire for God leads people to search for him

Within all people there is a longing for God

That longing itself is from God who desires and initiates a relationship with each person

Only in God can lasting joy and peace be found in this life and in the next

10. Natural Revelation

Natural Revelation – the created world

Natural Revelation is talked about in the Bible

The Old Testament refers to it in Genesis and Wisdom

 Paul’s Letter to the Romans

11. Proofs for God’s Existence – memorize one of the Proofs word for word for the Unit 1 Exam

By:  Saint Thomas Aquinas

Background – Dominican Friar, Writer, Doctor of the Church

Wrote a Summary of Theology or Summa Theologica

One of Aquinas’s many accomplishments in the area of helping the Church teach about Natural Revelation, is The Five Proofs of God’s Existence

According to Aquinas, the reality of God can be proved, or logically demonstrated, in five ways.

The 5 Proofs of God’s Existence logically point to the existence of God as the First Mover, First Cause, Necessary Being, Model of Perfection, and Intelligent Being.

Background –

Each Argument emphasizes that we can come to know that there exists a reality which is the first cause and final end of all things, a reality that everyone calls God.

The First Proof: The First Mover

  1. The universe constantly moves.
  2. Everything continuously moves and changes.
  3. Human beings can see a need for a First Mover who set everything in motion and guides the actions of humanity.
  4. We call that First Mover – God.

The Second Proof: Causality

1.All things are caused by something else.

2.Nothing can create itself.

3.There must be an Ultimate Cause, which is not created by something else.

4.This uncaused First Cause is God.

The Third Proof: Contingency

*  Contingency means being dependent on something else for existence.

  1. The universe contains many contingent things – that is, things that came into existence because of something else.
  2. If everything were contingent, there would have to be a time where nothing would exist.
  3. This point in time would have been in the past.
  4. But things do exist.
  5. If they exist they cannot do so without a Necessary Being.
  6. A Necessary Being is one who creates but is not created.
  7. That Necessary Being, which gives life to all beings, is God.

The Fourth Proof: Perfection

  1. Most of us can point out the imperfections of the world and humanity.
  2. In naming imperfections, we acknowledge there are varying degrees of beauty, goodness, and knowledge.
  3. The Question then arises in our mind: How do we know perfect beauty, goodness, and knowledge?
  4. We know perfection because there is one all-perfect being who sets the infinite standard for wisdom and truth.
  5. We call this all-perfect being God.

The Fifth Proof: Intelligent Being

  1. There are things in the universe that on their own have no intelligence.
  2. Regardless of their lack of intelligence, they still act toward and achieve their end.
  3. One can then deduce that if things that lack intelligence still achieve their end, something that does have an intelligence and knowledge of their end and directs all things to their appropriate end must exist.
  4. This something can be seen as the intelligent designer behind our complex universe.
  5. We call this intelligent designer and magnificent architect God.

- Five proofs for the existence of God demonstrate that we can grasp with certainty the existence of God through human reason

-The human person is open to truth, beauty, moral goodness, freedom, and the voice of conscience
