An important message regarding plans for a future on-campus graduation ceremony
Once public health mandates permit larger gatherings, we intend to host a graduation ceremony on campus that allows the members of the Class of 2020 to come together as Damien alumni to proclaim their brotherhood and celebrate their accomplishments.
Cap and Gown Pick Up and Senior Celebration on Tuesday, May 19, 2020
Graduation Items Pick Up - Tuesday, May 19, 2020
3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
On the 19th, we invite you to drive to campus for a drive-through celebration to pick-up your graduation items.
In order to control the traffic flow, everyone must approach Damien from Palomares Avenue, which borders the south end of campus. From Palomares Avenue, please drive north on Damien Avenue. When you arrive at Gate 5 (which is the southern-most gate on Damien Ave.) make a right-hand turn into the Junior Parking Lot. When you enter we will verify your name, so we can get your items ready for pick-up, after which you will follow traffic cones and stop in front of the covered lunch shelter. (Please see the separate map for the route to follow.)
When you arrive at the lunch shelter, we will have your bag ready, with your cap, gown, tassel, honor cords, yearbook, etc. Inside of your bag will also be a card with your name on it. We will ask you to sign the card to indicate you have received your graduation items and also to indicate whether you would like your diploma delivered to your home on May 23rd.
We to ask you to help us expedite the amount of traffic we anticipate during the exchange of materials. Although we miss our families tremendously, we will not have time to catch-up with you at this time, though we would absolutely want to; but we look forward to doing so in the future! If your parents or siblings want to ride along, that is great and we would love it!
Please wear a face mask to protect your health and the health and safety of school personnel. Staff will also maintain the same safety precautions wearing masks and gloves.
Nonetheless it will be great to see everyone!
After your pick-up, you will be invited to receive a blessing from one of our Sacred Hearts Fathers, who will be at the exit.
What Should I Bring With Me?
- Student ID
- Anyone from your family (or friends) who want to come along for the ride!
- Face mask (for all occupants in the vehicle)
What Shouldn’t I Bring With Me?
- Textbooks, Chromebooks, uniforms, or any other school materials. We will NOT be able to receive those items from you during this event.
- We will schedule a separate event for the return of school materials and to clean out your locker.
AT NO TIME DURING THE DRIVE-THROUGH WILL YOU, OR ANYONE RIDING WITH YOU, BE ALLOWED TO EXIT OR TO PARK YOUR VEHICLE ON CAMPUS. WE ARE ALSO UNABLE TO ALLOW YOU TO ENTER THE CAMPUS GROUNDS PROPER, EITHER ON FOOT OR BY VEHICLE.

Class of 2020 Commencement Video - presented on Saturday, May 23, 2020, at 5:30 p.m.
On commencement day, at 5:30 p.m., we will share a special commencement video that will hopefully help you recreate at home some of the more ceremonial moments of a traditional commencement event. Be sure to wear your commencement regalia (at least your mortarboard) when you watch the video.
This special commencement video will be shared on the home page of our school website at damien-hs.edu, on Facebook @DamienHighSchoolSpartans, and on Damien’s YouTube channel.
Seniors, please check your Damien email account on Saturday, May 23, when we will share the links. Be sure to share them with your friends and family so they join us in this virtual celebration! The video file will also be made available for families to download as a keepsake of this senior celebration!
Senior Awards & Scholarships Recognition Programs
On Saturday, May 23, in addition to the Class of 2020 commencement video, we will also share web links for families to access our 2020 Senior Awards & Scholarships Recognition programs. These full color guides will be presented digitally and available for download. We hope these programs will be a wonderful companion to highlight the accomplishments of our class of 2020!
We’ll Return Again!
Determinations from Survey Results - Friday, May 15, 2020
Thank you to the seniors and parents of seniors who provided responses to our Graduation Survey from last weekend. We are grateful for your help in determining our next steps.
By a substantial majority, the results of the survey point to the information outlined below. I have also taken the opportunity to clarify a couple of points from the survey, and to answer some of the most frequently asked questions.
Determinations from the Survey Results
We are moving forward with a plan for a virtual commencement presentation on Saturday, May 23, followed by a physical graduation ceremony on August 1, 2020.
Why did we choose dates in August for the physical ceremony?
Although State and County guidelines continue to be uncertain, we believe this date is:
- Far enough into the future that a ceremony might be possible,
- The latest we could schedule a ceremony prior to most of the class having left for, or started, college, though we know, unfortunately, that not every graduate would be able to attend, and
- Not in conflict with the start of the 2020 – 2021 school year
If we find an August 1 ceremony is not going to be possible, we will examine our other options, which include:
- Smaller group ceremonies
- Individual (one-by-one) ceremonies
Regardless of whether you request to have your diploma delivered on May 23rd, you are a member of the Class of 2020 and will be invited to and welcome to be a part of any future celebration we are able to schedule. (See below for further details on receiving your diploma on May 23rd.)
Survey Clarifications and FAQ
- A family’s decision to participate in any potential ceremony is not exclusive. In other words, if you indicated you preferred August 1st, and that date were not possible, you would absolutely be invited to participate in any alternatives.
- If you indicated that you would be willing to participate in smaller group or one-on-one ceremonies and those were not possible, you would absolutely be invited to participate in any alternatives.
- Since we did not ask for names on the survey, we do not know who the individual respondents were. A number of respondents indicated the desire to receive their diplomas on May 23rd.
How will Damien know if you wish your diploma to be delivered on May 23rd?
On May 19th, at the Cap & Gown drive-through pick-up on campus (map & instructions coming soon), you will receive a card that you will give back to us (before you leave campus) allowing you to indicate your preference for receiving your diploma on May 23rd.
One of the most frequently-asked questions was whether we could do a “drive-thru graduation”.
The Archdiocese, in line with current Los Angeles County public health orders, does not allow such public gatherings on school or parish grounds.
We continue to work to make graduation special. Next up, we hope to see everyone on campus on May 19th between 3:00 pm and 6:00 pm, for the cap and gown drive-through pick-up.
