Damien High School

Many Damien students have worked in Tijuana over the years.  Last year over 200 students traveled south.  Many of them several times.  This is a chance to earn Christian Service hours, a Damien requirement.  For me it is an opportunity to introduce them to real poverty.  Just walking down the dusty road and seeing what people call home, or seeing their water supply in the blue barrel at the corner of the "house," the people cooking outside, the outhouses (some of them open to the stars), or their hand washed clothes hanging on the line, or the exposed electrical wires running along the ground, is a real eye opener.  This evokes sympathy, appreciation and generosity.
