CHINO HILLS - Hooting and hollering, the Damien High School fans danced out of the stadium, the glow of their cell phones lighting the night.

CHINO - Damien High School insisted it wasn't looking past struggling Chino on Friday night, but the Spartans might have played like it.

Trailing 7-0, Damien (7-2) stormed back for a Sierra League victory over the Cowboys with 29 unanswered points.

The victory set up next Thursday's game at Chino Hills that will decide the league title.

"We respect Chino a lot," Damien coach Scott Morrison said. "They have great tradition here. They're struggling a little, but it happens to all of us.

"Their kids played hard. We had to work for everything. They didn't give us anything."
The Mark Mendrun-Travis Echardies connection was the difference. Echardies caught six passes for 164 yards, the longest a 60-yard TD reception late in the third quarter.

LA VERNE - Damien's student section has a reputation for saying things that to outside observer, might be considered outlandish.

The opposition might think of it as irritating.

It was less than three minutes into the game that Damien students started the "it's all over" chant. They weren't far off.

Original Article by the San Gabriel Valley Tribune

LA VERNE - Good teams find ways to overcome mistakes.

In the Sierra League showdown between Damien and Glendora high schools, the area's top two ranked teams, it was the Spartans who showed why they're No. 1.

Damien had consecutive touchdown plays of 24 and 34 yards called back for penalties in the second quarter, yet the Spartans shook off the calls, converted a third-and-26 play, and scored on a 10-yard run by Chris Marine on the way to a convincing 33-13 win over the Tartans.
