The vast majority of textbooks adopted by Damien are available in a digital and hard copy format. For the 2017-18 school year, students may choose either digital or hard copy textbooks.
While the implementation of Chromebooks in the classroom does facilitate easier use of digital texts, the primary intent of the Chromebook program is to allow for more interactive instructional lessons and the use of productivity applications, such as the Google Drive suite. The decision to implement Chromebooks is not intended to mandate the use digital textbooks. In fact, we are excited about the possibilities and innovations in learning that will come from a consideration of the Chromebook program that looks beyond merely the benefits that may come about from the use of digital texts.
To this end, the decision as to whether students purchase digital or hard copy texts should be made based on personal preference and a consideration of the cost differences between the two formats.
Whichever format you ultimately choose, we do recommend that you buy your son’s textbooks from our official online book supplier, MBS Direct. This is the only way to be certain that you are buying the correct books for your son.
However, we do acknowledge that there are other providers of both digital and hard copy textbooks. If you are using an alternate provider, make certain that you buy the correct edition. The best way to do this is to copy the ISBN number of each book from the MBS virtual bookstore and make certain it matches what you are buying from the alternate provider.
When buying digital textbooks, it is also important to understand that you might be buying the digital version, or you might be renting it. Some rentals will be for 360 days others may be for 180 days (many AP books, which are normally used by college students for a semester, will fall into this category). Please keep in mind that with a few exceptions, a 180 day rental will be an insufficient amount of rental time. You should be prepared to renew the rental with a second 180-day term in February. As you are calculating your book costs you should also note that a book with a 180-day rental term will actually end up costing twice as much since you have to rent it for two 180-day terms. Some websites, such as amazon.com, allow the renter to rent for a variable number of days, and the rental is priced accordingly.
